Ebay study: How to build trust and improve the shopping experience

eBay has been one of the biggest and longest lasting success stories of the early dot com era. And a big reason for eBay’s success has been its effectiveness at collecting and using data. Michael Goul, chairman of the information systems department, finds that strategic use of data has enabled eBay to dramatically reduce transaction costs for users, enhance the experiences for both buyers and sellers, and save millions of dollars for the company.

Industry leaders, other stakeholders help keep MSIM five star program

A fresh easel pad waited at each of four round tables when members of the Executive Advisory Board (EAB) broke into groups to discuss what students learn in the department’s Master of Science in Information Management (MSIM) program. The program curriculum has been on the agenda in the past, but this was the first time that some new members would hear every course described. This was not to be a one-way presentation, however. Faculty members who teach in the MSIM were ready to listen to the industry advisors, and, armed with Sharpies, they filled the easel pads with notes.

Chairman’s message: Information Systems in the W. P. Carey MBA climbs in rankings

Business schools are in the midst of rankings season and magazines like U.S. News & World Report have announced their most recent verdicts. At the W. P. Carey School, graduate school rankings are not considered an end-all, but they are important markers of the School’s continued progress in achieving its mission. The IS Department’s graduate MBA specialty program ranking in U.S. News & World Report jumped six spots to 13 from 19. We are pleased with this jump as it reflects the hard work we’ve done to consistently update and upgrade curriculum to ensure we meet and exceed the needs of our recruiters. There are two IS-related options for full time W. P. Carey MBA students – a specialization or an opportunity to earn a second degree – the dual MBA/Master of Science in Information Management (MSIM) route. Both options are tightly integrated with MBA curriculum.
