On June 20-22, 2023, CARISCA will host the third annual Supply Chain Research Summit in Ghana. The 2022 summit attracted over 450 participants from 26 countries and featured more than 80 presenters.
In 2023, we are moving the summit to Ghana’s capital, Accra, to accommodate even more supply chain scholars, students and professionals. As in 2022, the 2023 Summit will be a hybrid event, held in person at the Fiesta Royale Hotel in Accra, Ghana, and virtually via Zoom.
This year’s summit will take an in-depth look at “Africa’s Supply Chains and the Future of Work.” We invite you to share your research, knowledge and insights by submitting a paper abstract for presentation at the summit. Proposals for panel sessions and special invited sessions are also welcome.
Africa’s Supply Chains and the Future of Work
A number of circumstances call for an examination of the future of work in Africa’s supply chains. These include growing unemployment among youth, the need to build human capital and the desire to increase productivity of both formal and informal businesses, particularly in developing countries.
Other factors that have implications for the future of work and the efficient management of supply chains are the desire to expand social protection to cover the most vulnerable in society and the need to alleviate risks associated with disruptions in the global marketplace. The COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war are just two examples.
Africa is a natural resources hub, with a youthful population of 1.3 billion consumers spread across 55 countries. By 2050, the population is estimated to reach 2.5 billion and the combined gross domestic product to exceed $8 trillion.
Africa will undoubtedly play a major role in international trade, and African supply chains can no longer be ignored in global economic discussions. The future of work across the globe will largely depend on efficient continental linkages, and Africa’s role cannot be overemphasized.
What skill sets and workplace designs will be required in Africa’s supply chains to enable the efficient integration of Africa into global supply chains?
Addressing these issues requires a forum where supply chain scholars brainstorm and share ideas on how African supply chains can be repositioned to achieve the all-important role they have to play for the survival of the global economic system.
